Which Productivity Profile Are You? I love headlines like this. I get so much value from picking out a “profile” and learning how I can improve my “productivity”. This was the article I read today, written by, Todd Henry, author of The Accidental Creative and Die Empty, that still has me thinking hours later – how can I be better? I am currently struggling to learn more skills to add value and variety to my professional life.
Henry defines three main components of productivity as: mapping, making, and meshing.
Mapping is the planning and strategic development phase of work.
Making is producing/doing the work you get paid to do.
Meshing is skill development, understanding why you do what you do, and pursuing your interests.
Based on these three components there are four general formulas for a person’s productivity profile, according to Henry.
1. Mapping + Making = Driver
Someone who is efficient in the short-term but eventually ineffective because there is little thought for skill and curiosity cultivation.
2. Mapping + Meshing = Dreamer
Someone who talks about ideas and develops goals but lacks discipline to follow-through.
3. Making + Meshing = Drifter
Someone who loves to develop skills and follow curiosity but lacks motivation to finish a project and moves on to the next idea.
4. Mapping + Making + Meshing = Developer
Someone who is positioned to create value in their work through discipline and planning, and pursues curiosity and skill development on a regular basis.
It’s a no brainer that #4 is the ideal productivity profile. But how do you get there?
At this stage in my life, I am a driver. 100%. I push hard to get work done, well, efficiently, and do great work. Or at least did. Now, I am finding I wish to work on skill development – specifically web design and coding but I lack the discipline to sit down and teach myself how to do it. Believe me, I’ve been trying for the past year to read books and take online courses. My approach is not working.
At this moment, I am unsure how to motivate myself to learn and do web design, confidently. Honestly, I know a hands-on experience with a mentor would be good. Or taking on a web design job; I’d work very hard not to disappoint my paying client.
But my confidence just isn’t there yet. Writing this, I feel it and can hear it loud and clear. I am stalling. Why?
Listening to the Accidental Creative podcast where Henry interviews Jeff Goins, author of The In-Between, gave me a lot of insight into answering that question. Goin’s speaks about taking action in your work and removing the words “aspiring” or “wanna-be” from your professional vocabulary. He theorizes that this mental shift will make you take yourself more seriously.
What I find to be true about this theory is that I am not willing to call myself a “web-designer”. I tell everyone that I am ‘learning web design’.
I realize that building confidence and finding a mentor are integral to my growth as a professional. It’s my way of adding the “meshing” to my equation to go from “driver” to “developer”. At least – that’s my solution so far.
